Katherine W. Hirsh, DPhil has been using type in coaching, training, management consulting, education, and personal, professional and faculty development for nearly 20 years. She is a co-author with Elizabeth Hirsh and Sandra K. Hirsh of the second edition of Introduction to Type® and Teamsand the third edition of The MBTI® Teambuilding Program: Leader’s Resource Guide and co-author with Elizabeth Hirsh of Introduction to Type® and Decision Making (2007). Her preferences are for INTP.
Dr Hirsh received her BA in Cognitive Science from Pitzer College (CA) in 1986, her MA in Psychology from Johns Hopkins University in 1988 and her DPhil in Experimental Psychology from York University (UK) in 1992, and following that worked at Cambridge University (UK), Cardiff University (UK), Macalester College (MN) and the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
In 2004, Dr Hirsh and her sister Elizabeth Hirsh, MS, formed HirshWorks, LLC, a writing, educational leadership and management consultancy devoted to improving the performance of individuals, groups, teams and organizations in leadership, team work, facilitation, writing and teaching. Dr. Hirsh’s facilitation metaphor is of a rollercoaster - she sees facilitation as providing a safe structure in which individuals can try out things that seem frightening at least initially and ideally find out that these things are fun. In her practice she aims to provide a bit of scaffolding, a track to guide the ride/journey, and the momentum to start things on their way.
Dr Hirsh has facilitated MBTI® workshops for the Association for Psychological Type International, the Australian Council for Education Research, Oxford Psychologists Press, Proctor & Gamble - Europe, Medtronic, Central Connecticut State University, the Society for Leadership in Academic Medicine, Coca-Cola, NA, Zurich Insurance and the Ontario Association for the Application of Psychological Type – Canada. She is a member of the traveling workshop faculty for the Collaboration for the Advancement of College Teaching and Learning and the faculty of the Compleat Scholar Program at the University of Minnesota.
Dr Hirsh is active in the Type community, serving on the Board of the Association for Psychological Type (APT) International as the Communications Director in addition to serving as the Conference Chair for the 2005 Conference and as the Pre-Conference Chair for 2007. She is a founding member of the APT International e-Chapter and is a program and curriculum evaluator for the APT International Online Learning Initiative.
